For a long weekend, Adrienne, Jeff, Corrina and I headed to Homer for a few nights in a plush cabin overlooking Katchemack Bay and one night in Jakalof Bay. Before the trip, I spent a great afternoon with the Ricker's. They looked as great as when I last saw them (about 10 years ago !!). We swapped stories and the hours flew by. I must admit that my worries about Kabeyun under its new director we assuaged knowing that Bill was a part of a strong board of directors with the great vision.
Once in Homer we spent our first night with the blender producing margaritas as a vacation mode swept over us. The next morning we were on the dock early to catch a water taxi over to Jakalof Bay.
Arc wasn't too into the boat-thang:
Our camp on Jakalof Bay was picturesque. What you cannot see is the road running about 200 yards away from our tents (luckily there were less than a dozen cars that used the road in our 2 day stay):
After we got cmap established, we biked along the Rocky River Road in hopes of reaching the Gulf of Alaska. Less than a fourth of the way into the trip the alders had overgrown the trail so much that we dropped our bikes and hiked a bit.
We ended our hike at a cabin near the cable crossing of the Rocky River.
The cabin also had a detached sauna (note the Rocky River in the background ... perfect for dunking):
While in Jakalof, we feasted on clams (dug by Corrina and Jeff) and massive and abundant salmon berries:
The bugs were pretty bad so we made a "White-Man's-Fire"
On our second day across the bay from Homer, be biked in Seldovia - a fantastic fishing town with not a lot going on but a ton of character.
