Extra Credit

Orienteering Option

Due to the geometry and trigonometry involved in navigation, I am offering extra credit for any student who participates in an orienteering event.  The events schedule can be found at:

http://www.oalaska.org/Archives/2006/2006schedule.html

You need to provide proof of competing in order to receive credit (the results from the paper or website).  The competitions usually cost between $1 and $4.  Each competition you do is worth 3 points of extra credit (one homework assignments worth).  You may do a maximum of 9 points extra credit.

Tuesday Night Fun Run Option

Connect with community members at the Tuesday Night Fun Run.  The events schedule can be found at:

http://www.muni.org/parks/tuesday.cfm

You need to provide proof of competing in order to receive credit (the results from the paper or website).  The competitions cost $2 for each one or there are season and family rates for the entire series.  Each competition you do is worth 3 points of extra credit (one homework assignments worth).  You may do a maximum of 9 points extra credit.

Earth Walk Option

Complete Anchorage's Earth Walk in a single day under human power (not by car, motorcycle, etc; you may use a bike or skis, though).  Provide proof that you completed the Earth Walk through photos or another means (the photos may be digital and given to me on a CD or through email) plus one detail about each planet you visited on the walk (you may get these right off of the planet signs).  The sun is located in downtown Anchorage (5th and G) and Pluto is at the chalet at Kincaid Park.  The assignment is worth 10 points.  For more information click on the following link: http://www.anchoragerotary.org/planetwalk.html

Anchorage Museum of History and Art Option

Tour the Anchorage's Museum of History and Art and find a piece or exhibit that captures your attention and contains some mathematics.  Research the artist and the piece or exhibit and write a one page reflection.  Include in your paper a detailed description of mathematics you discovered plus a listing of all your resources.   This assignment is worth 10 points.  For information on the museums's hours of operation, entrance fees, and directions click on the following link: http://www.anchoragemuseum.org/

Explain the Trick

Go to the following website (http://www.milaadesign.com/wizardy.html) and follow the directions.  At the end of the session, the website produces the same symbol you were concentrating on.  Explain in writing how this is possible for 5 points.
