Day 0: Peak 5010   5.23

There is a seldom climbed peak in the East Fork Valley simply known by its elevation: 5010.  It is tucked way back in the valley and provides incredible views of the surrounding giants that border the Knik Glacier, Hunter Glacier, and Eklutna Glacier.  It is really a neat place.  Getting there turned out to be a really enjoyable experience - only a relatively short section of post-holing and bushwacking.  Thankfully, the MCA and state park have been working on the East Fork trail and it is in good shape to the knoll.

The chariots!

Thanks everyone for helping us get our gear in for the traverse! An added chore to the early morning start.. Much appreciated!

Hiking on the East Fork Trail

Dave practicing up for later in the day when this skill would be needed (with bigger consequences!).

At Talchina Falls

Our first glimpse of Peak 5010 ... it looked a bit snowy for our tastes (thoughts of a long now slog filled our imaginations).

Taking a break before the knoll

Let the slog begin!

A look at 5010 from our high point on the knoll

Crossing the East Fork

Resting up before the climb

Leaving some unneeded items for the walk out

Some people just get to bushwack, others just get to post-hole; we got to do both at the same time!

I found a random camera on the tundra. No film, though.

Following Ross into the sun

There was a surprising amount of rock and tundra along the ridge; our visions of a total snow slog vanished the higher we climbed

Dave on top breaking the Spring 2010 curse

David S was wiped out; he was sick all week and really pulled through to join the group

We spent about an hour and a half on the summit basking in the sun and admiring the area around us

Some cool bird that kept soaring around us

One last bit of bushwacking and snow slogging to get to the river (there was a bit of buttsliding in there, too)

Down but not out ... still a good bit from the 4 wheelers but incredibly stoked to have had such a great day in the sun.
